Training event in Romania
The small town of Saveni in Romania was the setting for the second mobility of the Erasmus+ K2 Project “The European Newsroom”, held May 8-12, 2017 at Liceul Teoretic “Dr. Mihai Ciuca”. The visiting schools were Liceo Statale “Alessandro Mazzoni” from Caserta, Italy (accompanied by Julie Mae Rowland) and Raudaskylan Kristillinen opisto from Ylivieska, Finland (accompanied by Jussi Kangasluoma).
During the five-day training event, Video journalism and the Interview as tools for phenomenon- based learning, the hosting school coordinator, Cristina Chiorescu organized workshops, activities and visits aimed at giving the students from the three participating countries the opportunity to learn how to document and create high quality informative videos.
Organization of training workshop
Starting from day one, students collaborated enthusiastically with their European peers and spoke in English with minor difficulties. As programmed, the eight Romanian, four Finnish and four Italian students were divided into four production teams; each group was made up of one Finnish, one Italian and two Romanian students. Teams were assigned daily tasks such as; developing storyboards for a news story, preparing questions for an interview, conducting and filming an interview, learning and implementing techniques on editing and producing a tutorial video. There was constant teamwork spirit and students showed a genuine interest in completing assigned tasks. The students were provided with all the necessary equipment and space needed to work; a large workspace with computers, internet connection, WI-FI, digital cameras and writing materials.
Highlights in training
Students and teachers were given a guided tour of the television studio TVIasi and afterwards, participated in a training workshop given by two specialists in the field of videojournalism. Students learnt about the techniques of filming and editing a news story interview and were able to have a hands-on experience in a professional TV studio.
Cultural exchange
Day excursions to Iasi and Botosani and local visits in Saveni allowed students to familiarize themselves with Romania, its history, traditions and current state. More importantly, the alternating moments of project tasks and socializing strengthened friendships between the students who discovered themselves to having common interests.
Hospitality and Accommodations
The hosting school coordinator, Cristina Chiorescu and colleagues organized an ideal, hassle-free stay with transport, accommodations, meals and visits all provided. The programming of daily events was well-planned and precise and students were able to enjoy their new experience in Romania.
Conclusion
In the true sense of the word, the collaboration between the three European schools successfully fulfilled the project objectives. Cultural diversity enhanced the dynamics of cooperative learning between students who were successful in communicating in a common language, English. During the training event, students were able to develop their skills to research, document, and post process materials to create high quality videos.
